Erwachsene Weibchen ern\u00e4hren sich zun\u00e4chst vom Blut des Wirts (f\u00fcr die Fortpflanzung erforderlich) und legen dann Eier auf den Wirt. Diese Eier fallen normalerweise vom Wirt auf den Boden und schl\u00fcpfen zwei Tage bis zwei Wochen sp\u00e4ter. Flohlarven erscheinen und ern\u00e4hren sich von toten Insekten, Blut oder anderem organischen Material. Fl\u00f6he sind meist an dunklen Orten zu finden, da die Larven blind sind und Licht meiden. Aus diesem Grund sind die Einstreu, Fu\u00dfleisten und dunkle Stellen Ihres Haustieres (wie unter Teppichen, M\u00f6beln und Teppichen) in der Regel in verschiedenen Phasen des Lebenszyklus mit der h\u00f6chsten Konzentration von Fl\u00f6hen befallen. Ein bis zwei Wochen sp\u00e4ter verpuppen sich die Larven und bilden Kokons, und erwachsene Fl\u00f6he erscheinen ein bis zwei Wochen sp\u00e4ter.
